What is Water Hyacinth?

Water hyacinth is an aquatic plant common in river areas in Vietnam.

Water hyacinth usually floats on the water surface or in humid areas. It proliferates and is very easy to grow and care for. Therefore, in areas rich in raw materials for water hyacinth weaving, people proactively cultivate it for easy care.

When mature (about three months old), water hyacinth reaches a length of 60-90cm; this is the ideal time to harvest. People will cut the water hyacinth close to the root, remove the leaves, and then dry it in the sun until it dries. After that, the dried water hyacinth fibers will be treated for termites, and the water hyacinth fibers will be ready to be woven into handmade products. Depending on the needs, the water hyacinth fibers can be kept in natural color or bleached to serve custom designs.

Artistic items made from water hyacinth fibers

Currently, water hyacinth products are very diverse in terms of design, size and price. They are used for many purposes, but the most typical is still for furniture and decorating. With the skillful hands of artisans, the rough water hyacinth fibers are gradually transformed into beautiful products, attracting attention from everyone.

Water hyacinth fibers can be crafted into diverse products suitable for living and decorating purposes. In addition, water hyacinth weaving techniques are very diverse; three primary methods are used to weave water hyacinth: rice nut weave, fish bone weave, and twisted weave. In addition, people also combine it with other materials such as sedges, metal frames, and wooden frames to help increase the aesthetic value and durability of the product.

Below are some images used to describe the weaving techniques of water hyacinth fibers:

In addition to weaving home decoration products, water hyacinths can be used to weave fashion products such as handbags. The process of weaving handbags requires high techniques and the craftsman’s skill, especially when handling small weaving and twisting strokes to hide the tears of the water hyacinth fibers. Water hyacinth fibers can be torn or kept intact to create unique and stylish products, depending on the design.

Water hyacinth fibers are environmentally friendly and bring high economic and aesthetic value. Water hyacinth promotes traditional handicrafts with diverse applications, creating jobs for people in river areas.
